Why you'll love this mid-century modern lounge chair
The Knitting Lounge Chair was originally designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen in 1951. Released as a limited edition it soon became a design classic and a much sought after collectible. Reissued in 2018 by Danish design brand Audo, this elegant, inventive chair has now been reimagined with a natural oak, dark stained oak, and walnut frame.
Defined by an exposed, triangular construction with gently curved seat and back the Knitting Lounge Chair is an affirmation of Kofod-Larsen’s reputation as a master of proportion and unexpected, sculptural form. Ideally pitched for relaxation, the chair takes its name from the distinctive cut-outs used for resting the elbows when knitting, or reading.
Beautiful from every angle, the Knitting Chair’s enveloping form gives it a relatively small footprint that means that it is perfectly placed in small spaces as well as more spacious ones.
The design also stands out on comfort – the result of Kofod-Larsen’s constant care to ensure ideal angles and lumbar support. The clean, sculptural lines – achieved through the designer’s close work with joiners – and the high-end, natural materials make for an unforgettable, conversation-sparking silhouette.

Ib Kofod-Larsen
Architect Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921-2003) had a successful career in the 1950s and 1960s when Danish design was flourishing across the world. A large part of his vast furniture catalogue was designed for the non-Danish market and manufactured abroad. He worked especially for American, Swedish, British and German furniture companies and manufacturers, and this may be the reason that his furniture has undeservedly become better known internationally than in his home country of Denmark.
Ib Kofod-Larsen formed part of a movement known as Danish Modern, but he went slightly under the radar and worked in the shadow of Kaare Klint, Hans J. Wegner, Børge Mogensen, Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl and Nanna Ditzel. Today he is called one of the most underrated – but most exciting – names on the Danish design scene. And one of the greatest design brains Denmark ever had.
