Eames Lounge Chair voted public's favourite
In a bid to find the public's favourite piece of design classic furniture / lighting we ran a 32 day 'knockout style' competition dubbed the 'Design Classics Cup'. Each day we pitted one of 32 designs against each other and used Instagram's 'poll' feature to allow our followers to vote for their favourite. The competition threw up a number of surprises but one design stood out, winning each of their heats by an impressive margin; the Charles & Ray Eames designed Vitra Eames Lounge Chair.
You've seen the chair and marvelled at its design, but do you really know the Eames Lounge Chair? Find out more below.
The Eames Lounge Chair
The original Vitra Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman is the epitome of a design classic in furniture terms. Manufactured under licence from the Eames estate by Vitra it's one of the most famous original designs by Charles & Ray Eames. Designed in 1956 the chair has been in continuous production ever since - an undeniable sign of the timelessness of this particular piece of design history.
The Chair and Ottoman was originally designed as a modern interpretation of the traditional club chair. It consists of three laminated wooden shells attached to a die cast aluminium frame on shock mounts, giving a flexible connection. Soft leather (nappa cowhide) upholstery sections provide the comfort and an innovative fastening system is used to fix the cushions to the shells without the need for visible screws or nails. A zipper sewn onto the edge of the cushions attaches to a plastic backing that then clips onto a series of hidden rings. The base is swivel on the chair and fixed on the ottoman.
Unlike the sleek, clean lines of other Eames designs such as the DSR Chair, the Eames Lounge Chair was intended to be, first and foremost, inviting. Charles once explained that the lounger should have,"the warm receptive look of a well-used first baseman's mitt."
Charles and Ray’s friend, artist Sister Corita Kent, did the calligraphy for the first Eames Office graphic of the Lounge Chair. It showed the design in an exploded view.
Whilst there are a number of inferior copies of the Lounge Chair available online at a fraction of the price, often labelled as 'Eames inspired', true connoisseurs will appreciate the quality of this original. The Lounge Chair is a bespoke piece of furniture which will give many years of lounging pleasure. Besides anything else it's a truly comfortable chair - anyone who already own one of these will vouch for this.
