Description
This Knoll Butterfly Chair, originally designed by Jorge Ferrari-Hardoy, Antonio Bonet and Juan Kurchan in 1937 has been re-released by Knoll in celebration of the chair's 80th Anniversary. A radical design of the time the three architects decided to redesign a classic of military outfitting: the 'Tripolina', a folding armchair used by the British army and designed by Joseph B. Fenby in 1877. They substituted the wooden skeleton and metal joints with a structure in tubular metal, a feature of the new so-called 'rationalist furnishings'. Between 1947 and 1951, the Butterfly Chair was present in the Knoll catalogue, and since its debut, Butterfly has been a huge success as a symbol of lightness, freedom, and a lifestyle that evokes an informal elegance.
This newly released anniversary edition has important improvement to reflect technological advances and craftsmanship. Quality materials make the lines even more sinuous and dynamic. Whilst the frame is available in chrome-plated steel or coated in black or white, the thermoformed felt is crafted into a self-supporting structure to serve as both seating and covering. This can be assembled directly onto the structure without adding stitching for ultimate comfort and style. Such innovative details serve to enhance a classic of the history of design, focussing on its beauty and projecting it into the future.
