Top Tips for an Irresistible Instagram

Instagram is the fastest growing social media service and as such, it has become increasingly important for businesses, brands and bloggers to use the platform for growth. Although Instagram wasn't a new idea - instant sharing of photos with friends and followers was first started by Flickr - it has revolutionised the way we share photos and allows everyone to edit and share their favourite images instantly, even if they aren't a professional photographer.

Instagram can be fairly difficult to crack which has led to an increasing amount of bots, bought followers and bland content - check out this bot test from Matthew Pike over at Buckets & Spades. In a day and age where time is just as important as money, we can understand why people invest their money instead of their time to grow their account. So we thought we'd talk to some of the bloggers, Instagrammers and brands we love the most to get the inside scoop on how to best manage an Instagram account. We asked everyone the following two questions;

What elements do you consider (per post and for the whole look and feel of your feed) when creating content for your Instagram? 

It depends on where or what exactly I'm shooting, but usually the main elements I consider when creating content have got to be lighting, depth of field and colours within the scene itself. I try to keep the majority of my content fairly minimal and clean, this can be tricky sometimes so thinking outside of the box and finding locations nobody has really shot before is always fun but challenging!

If you had one top tip for someone starting up on Instagram what would it be?

Keep content in line with a certain aesthetic that you're going for and stick to it. I love finding Instagram feeds that are full of similar content that I find relevant and am interested in!

What elements do you consider (per post and for the whole look and feel of your feed) when creating content for your Instagram?

I like my pictures to work together both visually and in narrative - to tell a story about my life and my work. For me, keeping in mind a consistent purpose doesn't mean that every picture has to have the same theme - I post lots of different things - but the common thread is they all contribute to the story. To make it visually coherent I pay attention to my colours and tones and I do a bit of editing in VSCO to achieve that.

As well as the visual elements I pay a lot of attention to truth and honesty in my feed. Follower trust is important to me and is part of what I think it special about my gallery. This fosters genuine engagement with people and I have grown organically as a result over time. Finally, I try and make sure I engage with everyone. If they talk to me I talk back. Some people only follow those who fit with the strategy, but I follow people who have taken the time to share their thoughts in return. This does strange things to the algorithm and it means I take a hit on visibility with the big accounts I admire BUT for me real interaction comes first. Don't be one of those people who only follows or talks to the 'popular' group - the people you may want as a client or customer could be out there with a 'boring' looking account, but if they're talking to you then they are already interested in what you have to offer and you ignore that at your peril. 

Top tip for someone starting up on Instagram what would it be?

Be consistent,  real and straighten those horizon lines! Be consistent in what, when and why you post because it seems to help improve your reach. And be real in yourself and your message. Real attracts real afterall. Oh, and don't let it take over your life! It's easy for that to happen - to seek validation, and to feel less for not having a huge following. But in the end that time could be spent better on enjoying the life you're posting about.

What elements do you consider (per post and for the whole look and feel of your feed) when creating content for your Instagram?

I like to share a variety of close up images as well as full room shots - which are always so much more popular but it's nice to change it up. I try to keep a colour theme for my instagram feed which at the moment is made up of greys, whites and golds - simply because these are the colours that make up my home and interiors.

And if you had one top tip for someone starting up on Instagram what would it be?

Always use natural light - I find that at this time of year in the gloomy UK, you only have a small time bracket during the middle of the day to get those shots in - hurry up summer and long light days.

What elements do you consider (per post and for the whole look and feel of your feed) when creating content for your Instagram?

We generally look for balance, both through colour, style and quality of photographs. A good mixture of imagery that we have produced and customer generated photographs. Our style is generally to post light, bright and clean shots. Occasionally we will post a darker image, when we do this we just make sure that the photos it is surrounded by are light to create a strong contrast and make sure the feed itself doesn't get too dark.

As we currently have a relatively small product range we also think its important to break up product shots with inspiration images, these take the form of “content” posts which is basically imagery from our weekly blog post. 

The feed itself should represent us as a brand, clean, accurate and precise.  

And if you had one top tip for someone starting up on Instagram what would it be?

Post regular, engaging content.


There was a clear theme running through the answers from the bloggers and brands we spoke to - be consistent in what, when and why you post and engage, engage, engage.

If you're just starting off on Instagram and trying to grow your blog, business or just personal account, follow these Instagram tips and you should see healthy organic growth. But don't expect to be an overnight success. It takes commitment and hard work to grow an Instagram account organically, just like many other things in life.
