Straying from the Bedroom

Do you keep it in the bedroom or enjoy getting intimate in other locations? Would you choose the sofa or the kitchen table? What about a hotel or a tent?

An act that (usually) takes place behind closed doors, we conducted a survey to find out about the true sexual habits of Brits. The team at Utility Design subsequently found out how many Brits stray from the bedroom, plus the types of furniture and locations they prefer. From the bathroom to a barnyard, the statistics may surprise you…

Love in the Living Room

We discovered that a whopping 21% of Brits have strayed from the bedroom in the heat of the moment, with 56% opting for the living room – with that in mind, it may be the perfect time to invest in a new sofa after all!

Meanwhile, the bathroom came second with 39% of the vote, followed by canoodling in the kitchen (25%). The rest of the list included the guest bedroom (15%), utility room (13%), garden (12%) and the home office (8%).

We found a similar trend regarding the furniture and fixtures our respondents chose for doing the deed. Our findings revealed that 52% headed for the sofa, 39% for the shower, as well as the dining table (19%), kitchen table (11%), dining chair (7%), and a sideboard or cupboard (5%).

It also appears that we’re an adventurous nation, with more than 1.3 million Brits having attempted a saucy session with the aid of a shelving unit. Interestingly, men and 45-54 year olds were the most willing to stray from the bedroom.

Cities that Stray

We also uncovered the top cities where Brits are most likely to leave the bedroom.

In first place was Bristol, Liverpool was second, Manchester came in third, Edinburgh fourth and Newcastle took fifth.

In the middle of our list was Southampton, Leeds, Belfast, Sheffield and Norwich, while London, Nottingham, Cardiff, Glasgow and Birmingham finished near the bottom.

Away from Home

When getting intimate, it seems location does matter, especially when away from home. For example, our study uncovered that Brits are more willing to have sex outside of their homes when they have no social connection to that place.

This included new locations like a hotel (80%), B&B (50%) or tent (35%), when compared to a more social or familiar place, like an Airbnb (30%), a friend’s home (20%), or the home of a family member (19%).

Britain’s Sex Lives

If we consider the sexual habits of Brits in general, our study also suggested we’re a pretty sexually active nation. For instance, did you know that an estimated 4,526,400 British adults will have sex today? And a huge 3,083,200 will do it more than once!

The research found that, on average, the majority of Brits have sex 2-3 times per week, with residents in Manchester, London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast getting the most action. However, despite this average frequency, the average Brit unfortunately hasn’t done the deed in 67 days.

When it comes to age groups, our findings revealed that 25-34 year olds were the most sexually active demographic, with 76% having had sex at least once in the last week. However, it’s 18-24 year olds who are most likely to have sex today, while the majority of those aged 65 and over haven’t had sex in the last year!

All About Christmas

We also found that the time of year makes a difference to our sexual habits, too. Summer was revealed as the sexiest season (54%), with Spring and Winter tying for second (16%). Autumn was the least exciting time of the year, coming last with only 14%.

Holidays also have an impact. Despite many of us dressing up in suggestive yet spooky character outfits, only 2% of people associated sex with Halloween. Instead, for those looking to spice up their sex life, it seems investing in a sexy Santa or naughty elf costume may be a safer bet, with 46% claiming to get lucky more regularly at Christmas over any other holiday.

With all this in mind, whether it’s a sofa or a shelving unit, or if it’s Bristol or Birmingham, when it comes to straying from the bedroom, it appears us Brits aren’t afraid to experiment.
