MILAN, ITALY — Almost 3 weeks have passed since the 2016 Salone del Mobile Milano and as you may have seen in Part 1 of our Milan Update, there were tons of new design concepts and releases announced. As huge fans of furniture & lighting design, we were in our element walking amongst great designers and catching a glimpse of the designs soon to be gracing domestic and commercial interiors around the world.
Over the coming weeks/months we'll be bringing you the latest news on post-Milan trends and product launches, but for now we've compiled a collection of highlights from a few of our favourite design brands, including Moooi, Cassina and Magis..
When it comes to showcasing at furniture fairs, few dazzle as much as Moooi. It is as though their carefully selected range of designs are made specifically for these strikingly beautiful showcases. We highly suggest taking a look through their interactive tour from Milan, available here.
Among our favourite new releases is the Moooi Coppelia Suspension Light. Due for release in June 2016 (and available to order now at Utility) the Coppelia has been designed by Arihiro Miyake and takes its inspiration from the Coppelia, an enchantingly graceful ballet that evokes a delicate after-image in the air.
A modern take on a classic chandelier, it's defined by its fluid, three dimensional cross wire structure fitted with dozens of Led lights. When lit, they have a powerful glow that highlights the lamp's majestic form.
We'll keep you updated on new releases as they become available but for now, check out this one-off €100,000 marble seat. We can't imagine this will make it into our showroom but it's beautiful none-the-less.
Founded in 1976 and based near Venice, Magis have over the years, brought us design favourites such as the Magis Puppy, Proust Chair and Voido Chair. The first announcement from the Italian brand following Salone del Mobile is that the aforementioned Voido Chair will now become available in Rust Brown - we'll make sure to let you know as soon as that is available to order.
We're extremely excited about the imminent launch of the Mila Chair series, inspired by Catalan modernism. The Jaime Hayon designed polyproylene chair will be released in 6 colours and shall be available to order online at Utility next week.
The Bouroullec Brothers have had a busy 2016 and there seems to be no end to their new and inspiring designs. For Magis, their Officina collection of tables and stools provide a modern visual language to old-fashioned wrought iron.
We're also looking forward to the release of the Big Will table from Philippe Starck, an expansion of the Troy Chair range by Marcel Wanders and Konstantin Grcic's award winning Sam Son armchair, all of which will be available to order online at Utility in the coming weeks.
Cassina, under the direction of new Art Director, Patricia Urquiola, have revealed a host of exciting new additions to their furniture collection, including a limited edition Utrecht Chair finish. The artist Bertjan Pot has designed a fabric in three Jacquard variants specifically for the Utrecht armchair to offer a contemporary reworking of this icon from 1935 designed by Gerrit T. Rietveld.
Titled "Origins of the Future", the collection is based on a reflection of the brand's past, and includes pieces by Philippe Starck, Ora ïto and the late Zaha Hadid. Our favourites so far are the Beam sofa from Patricia Urquiola and the Volage EX-S from Philippe Starck - two sofa instalments that are sure to prove a massive hit with interior design lovers. There is also a collection of mirrors by Ron Gilad are intended to provide a clear reference to the contemporary art world.
Make sure to check out Cassina @ Utility and sign up to our newsletter to be the first to find out when the new collections become available to order.
In part 3 we'll be taking a look at more fan favourites in the shape of Swedese, Foscarini, Gan and more.
