Exploring the Muuto HQ
The Scandinavian design company Muuto recently decided to redesign their HQ in the centre of Copenhagen. The result spanned across a combined 1400m2 and gave a total transformation to the same old office space they had had since 2013 when they moved into just one floor of the building. Due to natural progression and continued growth, the new Muuto HQ now inhabits of three levels as well as a roof terrace overlooking the Copenhagen skyline.
Muuto CEO Anders Cleeman explained the ideas behind his vision, stating the purpose was to create something that ultimately served as a functional workplace for employees but also communicated the values and beliefs of the Muuto universe. The space would then invite retailers, architects, dealers and press and explores the blurring lines of workplace and showroom with the hospitality atmosphere. This then emphasizes how Muuto’s designs across furniture, lighting and accessories are suitable for any workplace context, whether is be canteen areas, stationery desk spaces, conference rooms or flexible work zones.
It was integral to Muuto that the various ways of working were embraced, therefore facilities were provided that allow for a multitude of work modes such as collaborative sessions, formal meetings and solo work sessions while embracing the social, informal encounters that happen throughout the day.
The workflows of each team within Muuto is reflected in the environment, the fluidity and collaborative essence were essential from the marketing to the design teams. Muuto investigated the flow of each team, allowing for the interior design to be informed by the workings and mechanics of each department within the company. By creating different zones for the various departments there is a sense of belonging in each team.
Each area shows variety and diversity; whether it is spatial typologies, desk settings, quiet rooms, showroom areas, conference rooms and informal meeting spaces. It is clear that there is a Muuto design for any of these needs, be it armchairs with deep comfort and high functionality for longer meetings, informal sofas for impromptu encounters, friendly chairs for canteen space or work - specific designs to provide added function and support throughout the day. The HQ is designed with the idea of it being relevant for many years to come in its aesthetic, quality and function.
Muuto believe that our senses activate our intelligence; this is seen through the activity based zones. Each area serves a functional and aesthetic purpose through the use of colour, materials, shapes, tactility and more, creating a space that is not only functional but also aesthetic and biological.
