USM Haller Buying Guide: How to Design and Order Your Custom System
USM Haller is a fully modular Swiss storage system built to last, reconfigure and grow with your needs. Its steel panels, chrome ball joints and flexible components make it suitable for everything from home offices and sideboards to coffee stations, media units, and large-scale storage walls.
Because each system is made to order, the possibilities are nearly endless. While our online store shows a curated selection of popular USM Haller layouts, you can design bespoke configurations with custom dimensions, colours, and internal fittings. This guide explains how to use the official USM configurator and place a custom order with Utility.
1. Using the USM Configurator
The official USM online configurator is the easiest way to visualise your system. It allows you to:
- Choose modules, view dimensions, adjust panel colours and view the realtime price as you tinker with your design.
- Select doors, drawers, and internal fittings
- Arrange your layout in 3D to see how it will look in your space
- Check for sizing constraints, including freestanding vs wall-anchored units
The configurator will generate an RRP as you build — this is the price you will pay through Utility. You can tweak your design to fit your space, budget, and style.

2. Finding Your Configuration ID
Once your design is complete in the USM configurator:
- Click the “Download Icon” (downward arrow located at the top middle of your screen) and select the document with an "i" icon. See screenshot below.
- Copy the configuration ID or link provided
- Keep this safe — this is what we need to process your bespoke order.
This ID contains all the details of your layout, dimensions, colours, and components, allowing us to accurately quote, confirm availability, and place the order with USM.

3. Placing Your Order with Utility
You have three ways to submit your configuration ID:
- Email: sales@utilitydesign.co.uk
- Live chat (during office hours) — immediate guidance and purchase link
- Liverpool showroom — see units on display, view samples, and discuss your options with trained staff
Once we receive your configuration ID, we will:
- Confirm the price (RRP from USM configurator)
- Provide photo confirmation of your build
- Share delivery instructions and lead time estimate (typically 4–6 weeks)
- Offer a payment link and, if applicable, options for interest-free payment plans
- Advise on assembly/installation options, including a white glove delivery upgrade if required
4. Common Questions About Bespoke USM
Can I change it later?
Yes — USM Haller is fully modular. You can add, remove, or reconfigure components in the future. See an example of this in action here: Aden Wang on Instagram.
Does it need to be fixed to the wall?
Our preconfigured units are freestanding. For larger or taller bespoke systems, the configurator will indicate if a counterweight or wall anchor is recommended.
Can you match an existing USM piece?
We can replicate a design, but panel colours may shift slightly over time due to light exposure. Exact colour matches are not guaranteed.
5. Colours, Finishes, and Lead Times
- All units are built and tested at the factory, which is why lead times are generally 4–6 weeks.
- Components themselves are standardised, but each system is custom-built to order.
Why a Bespoke USM System Might Be Right for You
- Spaces with unusual dimensions
- Desire for a unique colour combination or configuration
- Planning for long-term flexibility
- Need for specific internal fittings not available in standard layouts
7. Need Help? We’re Here
If you’re unsure about your design, configuration ID, or delivery options, our trained USM staff can guide you:
- Live chat on the website (immediate help)
- Email for more detailed enquiries
- Liverpool showroom — see samples, discuss layouts, and even pay in store
We’ll make sure your bespoke USM Haller system is designed exactly as you want it, priced transparently, and delivered with care.
