Our stand out events from London Design Week 2016

Here at Utility, anything design related sets our creativity alight, and last week was no exception as the very best in international design poured into the capital for London Design Week 2016.

Based at the iconic, glass domed Chelsea Harbour Design Centre, the event this week showcased more than 600 of the design world’s most esteemed brands to both the trade and public. Workshops, demonstrations and talks from international architects, designers and craftsmen also helped make it one of the hottest dates in the 2016 design calendar.

For those like us with a real penchant for design, the exhibition is a fantastic way to connect with influential designers, specialists and international talent.

And as our hearts lie in contemporary furniture, the unprecedented exhibition of the latest furniture, lighting, fabrics, and outdoor living has inspired us thoroughly. That’s not to mention the impressive mix of original collections and specially commissioned installations such as ‘Sculpture in paper’ inspired by flowers and fashion and created renowned paper artist Zoe Bradley.

A few of our stand out events....

Having followed the programme of events hosted at London Design Week, we’d have loved to have experienced them all, but here are a few of our stand outs covering creativity, furniture and lighting.

The importance of creativity

Sunday showcased a design workshop on developing creativity and was hosted by the KLC School of Design. Course leader Rachael White explored how to approach creativity in order to boost excitement in design work and push personal development as designers. The workshop also focused on how not to fall into the traps of using the same methods of approaching design. There were also sections on working to tight deadlines and drawing inspiration from the world around us.

There was also a talk from Wallpaper* Interiors Director Amy Heffernan who had scouted the showrooms looking for furniture, fabrics, design items and accessories that meet the magazine’s exacting standards of quality, creativity and quirkiness. Of course, all of these are elements displayed through our very own collection of contemporary interior and exterior design products.

A nod to successful lighting

Excitingly for us, London Design Week also included conversations on one of our favourite topics - lighting. The talk explored all aspects of the lighting design process with a panel of luminaries including interior designer Juliette Byrne, lighting expert Sally Storey, Porta Romana’s Creative Director Shazeen Emambux and Nick Fichte of Crestron. Everything from current trends in decorative lighting to innovations in technology and the challenges of new regulations were explored as well as the importance of getting light right and why it is essential to any well-designed space.

Here at Utility, through our range of contemporary furniture, we cater to all home interior styles and spaces. Which is why we were inspired by the ‘Big ideas for small spaces’ discussion hosted by KLC School of Design and led by Allyson Coats who discussed innovative ideas for those working with a small floor plan and how better to utilise their space.

You can find the full list of designers and brands present at London Design Week by visiting the Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour website.

I just wanted to express my thanks again for your great customer service. I ordered my items less than 24 hours ago and I’ve amended my order- yet I still have my order here with me now. You went out of your way to deliver my order and I’m very grateful. I wish more places had people like you :-)

I couldn't be happier with the custom made sofa bought through the online store. It is perfect and made all the more enjoyable by buying it through the guys at utility. Ben and Paul who delivered the sofa were amazing, kind and really helpful in a difficult situation (of course the lift broke when I was getting something delivered). Would highly recommend!

Just wanted to message and say that I'm a big fan of the Utility Stores and the types of products you guys sell. I work close by to the Manchester store at University Green, so I'm popping in a fair bit generally for cards, gifts, etc. I just nipped in again this afternoon about one product I'd bought earlier and the staff were super helpful and attentive. It made it really easy, and I was in and out in no time.

Just wanted to drop you guys a quick note to say how happy I am with the service I have had. Especially the two guys who delivered/carried into an awkward space/built/then took away the packaging, not to mention then gave me a lift into town. Thank you. Plus the sofa looks amazing. I will definitely be using you guys more in the future and will highly recommend you to anyone who will listen.
