Description
The original Vitra Eames Lounge Chair - here in Black Ash - is the epitome of a furniture design classic. Manufactured under licence from the Eames estate by Vitra this is one of the most famous original designs by Charles & Ray Eames. Created in 1956 it is now a classic in the history of modern furniture - the Chair (with its matching Ottoman) were originally designed as a modern interpretation of the traditional club chair. It consists of three laminated wooden shells attached to a die cast aluminium frame on shock mounts, giving a flexible connection. Soft leather (nappa cowhide) upholstery sections provide the comfort. The base is swivel on the chair.
There are a number of variations to the Eames Lounge Chair design. This version has a dark 'Black Ash' wooden shell which comes in a range of complementary leathers to suit the dark wood tone. The base is polished aluminium. Since the average person's height has increased since 1956 when the design was first designed, the lounge chair now comes in two sizes - classic (as per the original) or new, larger dimensions for today's taller individuals.

Charles & Ray Eames
American husband and wife design duo Charles and Ray Eames have had a profound influence on the visual character of American life, producing original work within the fields of architecture, furniture design, industrial design, manufacturing and the photographic arts.
The Eames’ first partnered with Vitra in 1957 to produce some of the most iconic pieces of furniture in the history of interior design. Today Vitra continues to reflect their philosophy on design and functionality, best understood through Charles’ own words: “Recognising the need is the primary condition for the design”.
