Description
In 1947 American designer George Nelson was commissioned to create a collection of clocks - the first collection of 14 clocks was launched in 1949, of which the Ball Clock was one. This went on to become an icon of American and mid century modernism over the ensuing decades and in the 35 years that followed Nelson Associates created more than a hundred different models of wall clocks, table clocks and built-in clocks.
Vitra began re-issuing the Nelson clocks in 1999 and to mark the 25th year of this re-edition and the 75th anniversary of the original market lunch, the company has created a limited edition collection of the ball clock in four different variations. This 'Dusk' version comes in hues of blue and grey to reflect the later part of the day in atmospehric cool hues. With a limited edition of just 600 pieces worldwide each piece comes with a limited edition label.

George Nelson
George Nelson was born in Connecticut in 1904 and went on to study architecture at Yale University, where he graduated in 1928. Nelson was one of the founders of the modernist architecture movement of the forties along with, Eliot Noyes, Charles Eames and Walter B. Ford - all of which he would later collaborate with. He became a highly regarded critic, author and commentator on design issues as well as his own exceptional creative talent. His Storagewall shelf system revolutionised the office environment and excited manufacturers Herman Miller who appointed Nelson as the company's design director from 1945-1965. Nelson also created other iconic designs including the Coconut Chair as well as a series of desk and wall clocks and series of Bubble Lamps for Herman Miller, now distributed by Hay. He died in 1986 but his memory still lives on as Vitra still manufacture his most iconic pieces under licence.
