Utility Presents: Lamp Building Workshop with Anglepoise

In celebration of our 25th anniversary in the design industry, we continued our year-long events calendar with an immersive Lamp building workshop hosted by British design royalty Anglepoise.

Reflecting a shared commitment to timeless design and enduring craftsmanship, we were honoured to welcome Anglepoise into our Liverpool showroom for an incredible evening of hands-on learning.

The event brought together 20 architects, interior designers and design influencers for a workshop like no other: building their very own Anglepoise lamp from the inside out. Guided by the knowledgeable and enthusiastic Anglepoise team, each guest assembled an Original 1227 Mini Desk Lamp – choosing from alternating arm sets to create a limited-edition black-and-white version reminiscent of the “Cruella de Vil” style.

This playful nod isn’t just coincidence. Anglepoise famously worked with Disney to supply lighting for the Cruella movie, cementing the brand’s presence not just in design circles, but on screen too.

Before the building began, Anglepoise owner Simon Terry gave an engaging talk on the company's 90-year history – from its industrial roots to its status today as a symbol of British design ingenuity. His insight into the evolution of the Anglepoise collection, and the people behind it, added rich context to the lamps we were about to assemble.

As we celebrate 25 years of design at Utility, it felt fitting to honour a fellow British design icon. The Original 1227 may be turning 90, but it continues to inspire – both in form and function.
