The CH07 Shell Chair is a testament to Hans J. Wegner's mastery of form and function, and it remains a celebrated piece of modern furniture design to this day.

Who designed the Shell Chair?

The CH07 Shell Chair was designed by Danish architect and designer Hans J. Wegner. Known for his pioneering contributions to modern furniture design, Wegner created the Shell Chair in 1963 but only went into production in 1998. This only serves to underline the visionary quality of Wegner as a designer.

Wegner (1914-2007) is widely considered one of the most creative, innovative and prolific Danish designers. Often referred to as the “Master of the chair”, Wegner created almost 500 chairs in his lifetime - many of them considered masterpieces of design.

Why is the CH07 commonly referred to as "The Shell Chair"?

The CH07 Shell Chair is referred to as the "Shell Chair" due to its distinctive, organic design that resembles the shape of a shell. The chair features a curved, wing-like backrest and a seat that appears to float, giving it a sculptural and airy quality. This unique form evokes the natural and flowing lines of a seashell, hence the name "Shell Chair."

Where are CH07 Shell Chairs produced today?

The Shell Chair has been in constant production by Carl Hansen & Son since 1998. Each chair is crafted by hand by expert craftsmen in the company’s factory in Denmark.

Each CH07 is constructed using a combination of wood and upholstery. The frame is made from laminated wood, providing strength and stability. The frame is made using a process of steam-bending, where wood is heated with steam to make it pliable, allowing it to be shaped into the desired curves.

Despite its avant-garde design, the CH07 Shell Chair is known for being surprisingly comfortable. The ergonomic shape of the chair provides support to the user's back and arms. Added comfort comes in the form of an upholstered seat, which is available in a myriad of fabric and leather finishes.

How to spot a fake?

As with many other iconic furniture designs, the internet is rife with replica versions of the Shell Chair. Luckily for fans of the original, these imitation chairs are much easier to spot than fake versions of some other well-known designs. The superior quality and build of the original CH07 is often enough to differentiate between an authentic Shell Chair and a replica, but just to be sure, here are a few other telltale signs.

The Label

All Carl Hansen & Son Ch07 Shell Chair currently in production feature a serial number and Hans J. Wegner signature to signify authenticity but older versions may feature a metal plaque or stamp. No matter the age, this identification will be found on the underside of the chair, at the rear of the side.

The Wood

If you spot knots and blemishes in the wooden frame, you’re likely looking at a fake. Carl Hansen & Son make their chairs from sustainable, high-quality Danish timber and the wood will have a smooth, even appearance.

The Price Tag

Authentic Shell Chairs are handmade from premium quality materials and the price reflects this. They’re built to be used, enjoyed, and loved for generations.
