The Great British weather can frustrate from time to time. With no guarantee that the good weather will last for long, it's important to be prepared once the Sun finally arrives. With the second May bank holiday around the corner, what better time to check out some of the city's watering holes that have a rooftop bar or beer garden?

Check out our guide to the best alfresco ale houses and wine bars the city has to offer.

1. The Merchant

The Merchant is situated on the corner of Slater Street in an old Merchant's House, formerly the home of Mello Mello. Boasting a refreshed interior that combines raw materials, greenery and minimal decor, The Merchant is somewhere you'd expect to find in Copenhagen or Berlin.

Speciality gin, craft beer on tap, freshly made pizzas, great music and a spacious beer garden has made this 'new kid on the block' a firm Utility favourite since its launch last year.

2. HUS Liverpool

Having fallen in love with the eating and drinking scenes of Stockholm & Copenhagen, the guys behind Baltic Social have recently opened HUS Liverpool. Acting as a social space / bar / eatery, HUS even has a free BBQ every Friday on their rooftop terrace.

Whilst there, make sure to grab a photo of the iconic artwork that adorns the rear of the building on Tithebarn Street. The large graffiti piece depicts a female nomadic character complete with literal beehive hairstyle

3. Constellations

Hidden in the centre of the Baltic Triangle, Constellations is an arts & events space that includes a 4500 square foot garden and bar area. Designed by H Miller Bros the outdoor space has been featured in Dezeen for its zig zagging courtyards that mimin the Victorian warehouses that surround this unique venue.

The garden bar stocks an extensive range of drinks including locally brewed craft beers such as the popular Love Lane. Be sure to check out the Constellations website for a roundup of the events being hosted in the Garden this Spring /Summer season.

4. Kazimier Garden

Kazimier Garden is a real little oasis in the middle of the city. It has a great Caribbean vibe to it, so it's perfect if you want a bit of character in your watering hole. There's  a great selection of drinks on offer that vary from season to season too, and it's also a regular host of top quality entertainment.

5. Ye Cracke

Ye Cracke is one of Liverpool’s oldest and most loved pubs. It’s gone unchanged for years and has one of the liveliest atmospheres in the city - you’re always guaranteed to find good conversation with some of the regular characters.

The beer garden, like the rest of the pub, is nothing flashy but is well worth checking out just for the atmosphere. You’ll be ushered inside in the evening though, so it’s best heading there for some afternoon imbibery.

6. The Attic

The sun terrace at The Attic on Parr Street is a fantastic place to hang out and enjoy the sunshine, especially if you like a beer or two. They have a wide selection of beers that will have you making a beeline for the place next time you’re in the area - we don’t recommend trying them all in one sitting!

7. Botanical Garden

If you like gin, then Botanical Garden is the place to be. Whilst it does serve an array of drinks, gin is its real speciality. It’s only open until September so best make the most of it whilst it’s open.

Located in the Baltic Triangle (the exact address is a little sketchy), Botanical Garden is one of the most striking looking beer gardens around, and with fantastic events, such as the new outdoor cinema run by Independent Liverpool, there’s always plenty going on.

8. Goodness Gracious

Goodness Gracious is the rooftop bar of the wonderful Oh Me Oh My and offers some of the best views of Liverpool to look out over whilst you enjoy your drinks in the sunshine.

The Royal Liver Building is literally a stone’s throw away, making for a truly iconic setting. Perfect if you want to show off the city to out-of-towners or just for an intimate drink with a partner or friends. One not to be missed.

The Pan Asian cuisine on offer is delicious, and both the rooftop and waterfront terraces make for some of the most stylish locations for a drink in the city.

13. Buyers Club

Not many venues can flit so effortlessly between wine bar, cocktail parlour, small plates restaurant and gig space, but here at Buyers Club, we think we do a pretty good job. Situated just off the beaten track of Liverpool’s burgeoning Hardman Street, Buyers Club plays host to regular garden parties, live music, BBQs and art exhibitions.
