Welcoming Informality With The Gubi Grace Lounge Chair
Tucked away amongst Tove Kindt-Larsen's jewellery designs since 1936, the conceptual sketch of the Gubi Grace Lounge Chair was only recently uncovered.
Working closely with Tove Kindt-Larsen’s family, Gubi has developed the original sketches and made the elegantly informal Gubi Grace Lounge Chair into a reality.
“I was fascinated by the timeless simplicity and elegance of this design – as well as the opportunity it presented to explore a material new to the GUBI Collection. Its ‘indoor-outdoor’ aesthetic is fresh and new, while its form and aesthetic interact with the wider Gubi Collection in a really interesting way.” - Jacob Gubi, Owner and Creative Director of Gubi

A Compilation Of Curves
Inspired by the curves and textures found on Denmark’s northern coast, the Grace Chair is a compilation of curves. The rattan lounge chair comprises a circular seat atop a slightly larger circular base. Long, hand-bent rattan loops form the frame, the lower backrest supports a generously upholstered seat cushion. Atop the seat is a loose cushion that can be positioned according to the sitter’s preference. Ideally placed in a sunny spot, the Grace Lounge Chair is also light enough to be taken outside on a warm day.

Meet The Designer : Tove Kindt -Larsen
Tove Kindt -Larsen (1906 -1994) is best known for working with her husband, Edvard Kindt Larsen. The pair had a great influence as part of the mid-century Danish design movement. That being said, Tove's influence in her own right should not be underestimated. An early pioneer in rattan furniture, Tove was already recognized for her award-winning wicker furniture when the couple met. An architect by training, Tove also studied furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. In 1945 Tove established a joint studio with her husband Edvard.

Informal Elegance
The Gubi Grace Chair brings a sense of welcoming informality to even the most refined spaces. Rattan’s rich surface texture further enhances the hand-crafted frame. Rattan has natural flexibility that allows it to bent and shaped at will – is it at the heart of Tove Kindt-Larsen’s vision for the Grace Chair. The result is a daring balance of elegance and informality with a frame that casts playful shadows across its interior. The deep cushion and flexible frame welcomes those who regularly curl up inside it like an old friend.

Rediscovering Rattan - A Sustainable Material
Hand made in Indonesia, the frame of the chair is formed in rattan with its ‘skin’ left intact. Before shaping, the rattan is steamed to make it more pliable. It is then held in a jig as it cools. Some flexibility remains to allow the frame to flex under the weight of the sitter. This adds another layer of support as the lounge chair adapts to the contours of the body.
Rattan stems regenerate every five to seven years, making rattan one of the world’s fastest-growing natural materials. This rapid growth, combined with the longevity of the material makes for a chair guaranteed to stand the test of time. A carefully constructed rattan chair can last for over a century. Over time, genuine rattan will acquire an attractive patina as it ages, resulting in timeless furniture that lasts for generations.
