Description
The Audo Copenhagen Knitting Chair is a masterclass in mid-century Danish design, combining sculptural elegance with a deeply considered approach to comfort. Originally created in 1951 by Ib Kofod-Larsen, the chair has been reintroduced by Audo Copenhagen as part of a new generation of modern design classics, bringing its distinctive character into contemporary interiors.
Defined by its angular, open frame and gently curved seat, the chair strikes a balance between visual lightness and structural presence. The exposed wooden construction highlights the craftsmanship behind the design, while the carefully proportioned form ensures it remains comfortable and supportive for everyday use. Its signature cut-outs are more than a visual detail - they are designed to support the arms naturally, making the chair particularly suited to reading, relaxing or extended sitting.
Despite its strong architectural profile, the Knitting Chair has an inviting and relaxed seating position. The low-slung proportions encourage a laid-back posture, while the angled backrest and seat provide a sense of support without feeling rigid. This thoughtful balance of comfort and structure reflects Kofod-Larsen’s reputation for designing furniture that feels as good as it looks.
Available in a range of wood finishes including oak and walnut, and paired with high-quality upholstery or sheepskin (see Audo Copenhagen Knitting Chair - Sheepskin, the chair offers both material richness and versatility. Each variation enhances the natural qualities of the design, allowing it to sit comfortably within a variety of interior styles, from classic mid-century settings to more contemporary or Japandi-inspired relatively compact footprint, combined with its sculptural silhouette, allows it to function as both a practical lounge chair and a statement piece. Whether placed in a living room, reading corner or bedroom, it brings a strong sense of identity to a space without overwhelming it.
The Audo Copenhagen Knitting Chair is more than a piece of seatin - it is a design object that reflects a legacy of craftsmanship, proportion and innovation. With its timeless form and enduring functionality, it remains one of the most recognisable and celebrated examples of Scandinavian furniture design

Ib Kofod-Larsen
Architect Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921-2003) had a successful career in the 1950s and 1960s when Danish design was flourishing across the world. A large part of his vast furniture catalogue was designed for the non-Danish market and manufactured abroad. He worked especially for American, Swedish, British and German furniture companies and manufacturers, and this may be the reason that his furniture has undeservedly become better known internationally than in his home country of Denmark.
Ib Kofod-Larsen formed part of a movement known as Danish Modern, but he went slightly under the radar and worked in the shadow of Kaare Klint, Hans J. Wegner, Børge Mogensen, Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl and Nanna Ditzel. Today he is called one of the most underrated – but most exciting – names on the Danish design scene. And one of the greatest design brains Denmark ever had.
