Description
Designed in 1951, the ETR (Elliptical Table Rod Base) by Charles and Ray Eames is one of the most distinctive coffee tables of the 20th century. Its elongated oval top and low profile earned it the nickname “surfboard table”, while the wire rod base reflects the Eameses’ innovative use of industrial materials.
Produced today by Vitra, the ETR retains all the elegance and playfulness of the original. The slim, elliptical top provides a generous surface without overwhelming a space, making it ideal for larger seating areas or as a central statement piece in a living room. The twin wire bases, finished in either basic dark or white (depending on tabletop selection), give the table a light, sculptural presence while ensuring strength and stability.
Both functional and iconic, the ETR Coffee Table embodies the Eames philosophy of combining utility with beauty. Charles & Ray Eames
Charles and Ray Eames were the husband-and-wife design team who helped shape modern design as we know it. Famous for their playful yet functional approach, the Eameses worked across architecture, furniture, industrial design and even film and photography — always with the belief that good design should improve everyday life.
Their collaboration with Vitra began in 1957 and has since produced some of the most iconic pieces in modern interiors, from the Eames Lounge Chair to the Eames Plastic Chair collection. More than just beautiful objects, their designs embody a philosophy of practicality, comfort and timeless style. As Charles Eames once put it, “Recognising the need is the primary condition for the design.”
