&Tradition JU1 Utzon Pendant Light

The &Tradition JU1 Utzon Pendant Light, conceived by Jørn Utzon in 1947, is a masterclass in architectural lighting. Originally developed a decade before Utzon began work on the Sydney Opera House, the pendant’s structure hints at the lyrical, sculptural qualities that would later define the landmark’s silhouette.

Made from lacquered steel, the shade is formed from four angular components using deep drawing and spinning techniques. While simple individually, these elements combine to create a refined, modular form with a strong architectural presence. Beyond its visual impact, the configuration is designed to disperse light with precision, providing balanced illumination in any space.

The pendant features a high-gloss finish, inspired by the ceramic-glazed chevron tiles of Sydney Opera House, creating subtle reflections that bring a sense of movement to the lamp. Measuring 22cm in diameter and 23cm in height, the JU1 is compact yet visually impactful, making it suitable for private homes, offices, or hospitality environments.

A fixed 4-metre fabric cord allows flexible placement, whether hung individually above a dining table or in rows and clusters to fill larger spaces. The JU1 Utzon Pendant remains a timeless example of Utzon’s design vision, blending sculptural form, functional light distribution and modernist simplicity.
