Made from solid oak, walnut or a combination of both - with a form-pressed veneer backrest, the Carl Hansen CH23 Dining Chair is available in a myriad of wood finish and papercord seat options. The chair has no armrests, which makes it practical for fitting around the table, even in small rooms. Thanks to its ingenious design and organic form, it is also unsurpassed for comfort. To this day the chair remains made in Denmark.

Description
The CH23 Dining Chair was the first of five chairs designed by Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1950. The organic contours and refined details of the CH23 are an early example of Wegner’s considerable talents as a designer.
Considered by many to be the Master of the Chair, Wegner succeeded in making the complex nature of his CH23 design seem simple, which is a quality that he became known for. Featuring a double woven seat and elegantly shaped cruciform caps, the CH23 has a richness to its appearance but is ultimately light and simple.
Thanks to the natural properties of oak, a clearly visible wood structure remains present when painted, while the oak and walnut mix version combines an oak frame and armrest with a magnificent walnut backrest. The oiled finishes create a lustre that brings out contrast in the grain and structure of the wood, which darkens over time to create a rich patina, while the clear lacquer version leaves a glossy, smooth finish.

Hans J Wegner
Danish designer Hans J. Wegner was born in Denmark in 1914. At the age of 17, he finished his apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker with H. F. Stahlberg. He moved to Copenhagen and attended the School of Arts and Crafts from 1936 1938 before he began working as an architect. Among Danish designers Wegner is considered one of the most creative and productive - receiving practically every major recognition given to designers, including the Lunning prize and Swedens Prince Eugen medal. He worked extensively with Carl Hansen & Son throughout his career to create some of the most iconic designs in twentieth century furniture.
