At Home With Deborah Choi

At Home With Deborah Choi

Vitra's Home Stories for A/W 2020 kick off with a look inside the home of Horticure founder Deborah Choi.

For those of you unfamiliar with Horticure, it's a consumer platform for plant care, connecting users with the knowledge, services and products that aim to keep your houseplants happy and your indoor spaces green.”

Founder Deborah Choi, a self-professed "recovering workaholic" emigrated to Berlin from New York City in 2015. Believing that greenery in the home can improve mood, concentration and overall wellbeing, Choi set up Horticure to help 'green up' indoor spaces.

"I have a young child, so home shouldn't be so fussy - but I also like things that feel natural and have a story. I would describe my space as 'minimal jungle', a refuge from the city. Sometimes I think of myself as a recovering workaholic. I used to work 12-hour days, 7 days a week. My daughter changed this for me. I have to shut off, regroup and think about things other than work."

My furniture is a mix of different functions and different aesthetics, like my collection of chairs.

"I really love to travel, especially now living in Europe. Bringing back the memory of places that I've visited is important to me and is reflected in my home. My furniture is a mix of different functions and different aesthetics, like my collection of chairs. I love the idea of mixing, but always with a sense of cohesion. Typically I try to achieve that through the materials or at least the heights. I love when things are a little bit off, but still come together."

"For me, sustainability is buying something of high quality that won't need to be replaced. This applies to furniture, but also to clothing. I'm not into fast fashion or fast consumption. Sustainability is the idea of continuing and supporting the cycle of craftsmanship."

Jasper Morrison's Moca Chair

The Moca chair by Jasper Morrison is an emblematic example of his 'super normal' approach to design. The stackable chair is simple and robust but with unique details. Moca's base is constructed with two arcs of steel tubing - one forming the front legs and backrest support, the other constituting the rear legs. Two veneered plywood she's are mounted on the base elements, anatomically shaped seat and backrest.

Prouve Chaise Tout Bois Chair

The Vitra Chaise Tout Bois Chair by Jean Prouvé is designed with ingenuity. At a time when metal was sparse, Prouvé created a completely wooden design, without the need for screws. This dining chair will look beautiful in any home due to its classic and timeless design. The solid and functional structure contrasts with the beautiful smooth oak to create an elegant chair that harnesses the element of stability.

Eames Hang It All

The Vitra Black Hang It All gives the original multi coloured hanger, designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1953, a classic beauty. With black wooden spheres on a black frame this designer coat rack is worthy of any home.
