Description

The Artek 901 Tea Trolley was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1936 and is the simplest and most graceful tea trolley among the ones created by Aalto. The trolley was inspired by British tea culture and Japanese carpentry & architecture. 901 is an excellent side table for any home and perfect for serving tea, coffee and other refreshments - or simply using as a side table or display area.

It comes in two original variants - with natural beech frames, white lacquered wheels and white high pressure laminate or black linoleum top. It was also reinterpreted by designer Hella Jongerius in 2017 and this version has a black lacquered frame, peat lacquered wheels with the bottom shelf in charcoal linoleum whilst the top shelf is peat linoleum.

About The Designer

Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is probably the most famous Finnish architect and designer in the world. In 1921 Alvar Aalto got the Diploma of Architecture at the Helsinki Institute of Technology and his career as an architect started. One of the most important works he was commissioned was the planning of the Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Paimio, Finland.

Alvar Aalto

Born in Kuortane, Finland in 1898, Alvar Aalto was one of the founders of Finnish brand Artek and is recognised today as one of the greatest masters in modern architecture. His long, prolific and varied career was marked by collaborations with almost all key public institutions - town halls, theatres, churches, libraries and universities - as well as standardised housing and private homes. In fact, it was the Paimio 41 Armchair, created in 1931-32 for the Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Paimio, that provided his international breakthrough. Artek was set up in 1935 to market and sell Alvar and Aino Aalto's furniture, lamps and textiles not just to Finnish customers but also to an international market. To this day, Artek still enjoys worldwide popularity and success, with Aalto's innovative designs forming the basis of the collection.
