Description
The Akari Light Sculptures (1951) by Isamu Noguchi are a series of luminaires, handcrafted from traditional shoji paper by Japanese artisans. ‘The harshness of electricity is thus transformed through the magic of paper back to the light of our origin – the sun.’ (Noguchi)
The Akari 14A Floor Lamp is a representation of illumination and physical lightness. The design of this lamp is such that the light filters through the lightweight paper form, making it unique. The lamp is crafted from washi paper and bamboo ribbing and is supported by a metal frame..

Isamu Noguchi
Los Angeles born, Isamu Noguchi continues to be one of the most celebrated sculptors of the twentieth century. He travelled a lot throughout his lifetime and this was a huge inspiration that can be found in his work through his experimentation of materials that he had seen widely used in different cultures around the world. His work did not gain public recognition until 1938 when he was commissioned to complete a large-scale sculpture symbolizing the freedom of the press, for the Associated Press building in the Rockefeller Centre. Noguchi seized this chance as it allowed him to fuse his passion for sculpture with his love of sharing its beauty with the world. His favourite piece was the Noguchi Coffee Table produced by Vitra - now a firm design classic.
