Description
The George Nelson Bubble Ball Pendant is one of the most instantly recognisable lights in modern design history - a soft, glowing sphere that brings warmth and sculptural presence to any room. Designed by American industrial designer George Nelson in 1947 and first produced by Herman Miller in 1952, the Ball is now made under licence by HAY, bringing this genuine mid-century classic to a new generation of UK homes.
>What makes the Bubble Lamp special is as much about how it's made as how it looks. Nelson developed the design using a self-webbing polymer spray originally created for the US military to protect mothballed ships - an unlikely piece of engineering repurposed into one of the most elegant lighting techniques of the 20th century. That same polymer coating is sprayed over a lightweight steel frame today, giving the shade its distinctive matte texture and even, diffused glow. It's a piece with real craftsmanship behind its simplicity, not just a shape.
The Ball is available in three sizes - Small (Ø32.5cm), Medium (Ø48.5cm) and Large (Ø68cm) - so it scales comfortably from a bedside pendant to a striking statement piece above a dining table or in a double-height hallway. Its rounded, organic form softens angular interiors and pairs equally well with mid-century originals, Scandinavian minimalism, or a more eclectic, maximalist scheme.
Because the design has barely changed since 1952, and HAY continues to manufacture it using durable, repairable materials, buying a Bubble Lamp is as much a sustainable choice as a stylish one - a genuine design icon built to be passed down, not replaced. It's held in MoMA's permanent collection, and remains one of the most searched-for lighting designs among UK design enthusiasts.

George Nelson
George Nelson was born in Connecticut in 1904 and went on to study architecture at Yale University, where he graduated in 1928. Nelson was one of the founders of the modernist architecture movement of the forties along with, Eliot Noyes, Charles Eames and Walter B. Ford - all of which he would later collaborate with. He became a highly regarded critic, author and commentator on design issues as well as his own exceptional creative talent. His Storagewall shelf system revolutionised the office environment and excited manufacturers Herman Miller who appointed Nelson as the company's design director from 1945-1965. Nelson also created other iconic designs including the Coconut Chair as well as a series of desk and wall clocks and series of Bubble Lamps for Herman Miller, now distributed by Hay. He died in 1986 but his memory still lives on as Vitra still manufacture his most iconic pieces under licence.
