Description
If the Ball is Nelson's most famous silhouette, the Saucer is arguably his most architectural. Flatter and wider than its spherical sibling, the Saucer Bubble Pendant trades height for horizontal presence - a fixture that reads less like a single glowing orb and more like a floating disc of soft light. It's the same 1947 design language, the same hand-applied polymer coating, and the same MoMA-recognised pedigree, reshaped into a proportion that suits low ceilings, wide tables and open-plan spaces just as confidently.
An idea born from frugality, not fashion
The story of the Bubble Lamp series starts with George Nelson wanting something he couldn't afford. Taken with the silk-shaded Swedish pendants he'd seen but found too expensive for his own office, Nelson looked elsewhere for a solution - and found it in a self-webbing polymer spray developed for the U.S. military, originally used to mothball ships and aircraft for long-term storage. Sprayed over a lightweight steel wire frame, that unglamorous industrial coating became one of the defining lighting innovations of postwar American design.
>Herman Miller put the series into production in 1952, and the Saucer variant quickly proved itself as one of the most versatile forms in the range - flat enough to sit close to a ceiling, wide enough to anchor a large table, and diffuse enough to flatter any room it hangs in. The design's significance was formally recognised with a place in the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art, cementing Nelson's status as one of the most consequential designers of the 20th century.
The craft in the coating
Each Saucer pendant begins life as a hand-formed steel wire frame, finished with brushed metal and nickel detailing at the ceiling rose and base ring. The self-webbing polymer is then applied over the frame by hand - a technique that hasn't fundamentally changed since Nelson first adapted it in his New York studio. Because the spray is worked by eye rather than machine-moulded, every finished shade carries subtle variation in texture, giving each pendant a quiet, handmade individuality that injection-moulded lighting simply can't replicate.
The Saucer's flatter profile also changes how the light behaves: rather than the fuller glow of the Ball, it casts a broader, more horizontal wash which is ideal for spreading soft ambient light across a dining table or kitchen island without the drop height a taller pendant would need.

George Nelson
George Nelson was born in Connecticut in 1904 and went on to study architecture at Yale University, where he graduated in 1928. Nelson was one of the founders of the modernist architecture movement of the forties along with, Eliot Noyes, Charles Eames and Walter B. Ford - all of which he would later collaborate with. He became a highly regarded critic, author and commentator on design issues as well as his own exceptional creative talent. His Storagewall shelf system revolutionised the office environment and excited manufacturers Herman Miller who appointed Nelson as the company's design director from 1945-1965. Nelson also created other iconic designs including the Coconut Chair as well as a series of desk and wall clocks and series of Bubble Lamps for Herman Miller, now distributed by Hay. He died in 1986 but his memory still lives on as Vitra still manufacture his most iconic pieces under licence.
