Carl Hansen CH162 Sofa
Designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1965 and rediscovered in 2013, the Carl Hansen CH162 Sofa is an example of Wegner's penchant for details. The horizontal and vertical lines of the sofa create a bold expression that is soften by the curves of the padded seat and back to create a visually and tactile sofa. Description
This Carl Hansen CH162 Sofa was designed by Hans J.Wegner in 1965. Manufactured by Carl Hansen & Son in Denmark this sofa is available as this two seater - the CH162 as well as a larger 3 seater, the CH163.
The CH162 Sofa, from the originally named 'Down Cushion Sets' sofa series, uses a combination of upholstered cushions filled with down. This was an innovative feature when Hans J. Wegner designed his modern living room in 1965 - rendering a fairly stringent design less formal. This sofa design is characterised by leg detail which has four straight sides at the base which 'fans' out towards the armrest, punctuated by a wooden plug which not only gives elegance but conceals a wooden screw which facilitates the work of the upholsterer.
The exposed timber frame detail is evident both from the front, side are rear elevations of the sofa and this is available in a number of finishes - white oiled oak, oiled oak, soaped oak and smoked oiled oak. It's also available in oiled walnut. It also comes in a large range of fabrics and leather options. For further information on fabric and leather grades please see the Carl Hansen Fabrics Page.

Ole Wanscher
Ole Wanscher (1903–1985) was a leading figure in Danish modern design and one of the most influential furniture architects of the 20th century. Known for his refined, timeless creations, Wanscher's work seamlessly blended classic design principles with the clean lines and functional elegance that define Scandinavian modernism.
A student of renowned designer Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Wanscher developed a deep respect for traditional craftsmanship, historical furniture forms, and structural clarity. His designs often drew inspiration from 18th-century English, Egyptian, and Chinese furniture, which he reinterpreted with a modern sensibility and precise attention to proportion.
In the 1940s and 1950s, Wanscher became widely respected for creating elegant and enduring pieces that were both artistic and practical. Among his most celebrated works is the OW149 Colonial Chair, designed in 1949 – a lightweight, graceful lounge chair that showcases his signature style: restrained luxury, exquisite joinery, and exceptional comfort.
Wanscher's collaboration with Carl Hansen & Søn helped bring his designs to an international audience, and his legacy continues today as collectors and design lovers seek out his timeless furniture for modern homes.
He also served as a professor of furniture design, influencing a new generation of Scandinavian designers. Today, Ole Wanscher is remembered not only for his masterful craftsmanship but also for shaping the global appreciation of Danish furniture design.
