Who are Montana?

Established in 1982 by Peter J. Lassen, Montana specialises in the craft of high-quality, creative storage systems. Five generations of the Lassen family have dedicated their lives to furniture design, and today the ship is steered by the founder's son, Joakim Lassen. As the Great-grandson of Fritz Hansen, design and innovation are in Joakim's bones.

Upholding traditions established by their founder, Montana furniture continues to manufacture in a small town on the island of Funen. Each day, 140 skilled craftspeople work hard to ensure the highest standards are achieved– so your Montana furniture will last a lifetime.

Montana's Unique and Creative Values

'As a sculptor starts with an abstract stone, I started with an abstract square box. I removed all the unnecessary parts of the box so that it eventually featured rounded edges, missing corners and retracted fronts, Montana's design DNA'

Peter J. Lassen believed that in every person is the need for freedom of expression and the desire to create. Montana was born from this idea, and every piece of furniture is designed to be personalised. Their simple, modular nature means they are modifiable in both form and colour.

Colour is at the centre of their philosophy. 42 complex and poetic shades have been developed in collaboration with award-winning Designer and Colourist, Margrethe Odgaard. Colour is integral to our identity. We relate to particular hues and shades, bright and light, dark and deep. We have personal preferences that influence what we wear, what we buy, and how we decorate our spaces. The presence of these colours in our homes affects how we feel, and Montana continues to champion the importance of its role in furniture design.

Furthermore, their colours are finished in an odourless water-based lacquer that contains no harmful solvents.

What is the Montana System?

Montana has created 36 modules in 4 depths and 42 colours. They're designed to complement and fit one another. Pieces can be paired and grouped in unique ways. What Makes Montana leaders in Sustainability?

For 25 years, Montana has worked collaboratively with The Danish Environmental Protection Agency, setting up procedures and implementing changes, all for the cause of sustainability.

In 2019 they became one of the first Danish companies to be awarded the official EU Ecolabel. Considering Joakim Lassen's background in Environmental Consultancy, the company's drive and commitment is not surprising.

 'Achieving this certification has been very important to us, and it's something we've worked towards for a long time. I'm delighted that Montana is one of the first furniture manufacturers in Europe to achieve it because I consider sustainability a key part of our responsibilities as a manufacturer in Denmark'

For years the company has voluntarily run ‘cradle-to-grave’ analyses of their products. From raw material extraction to production, distribution and disposal, the environmental consequences of each step have been carefully assessed and approved by the Danish Indoor Climate Label.
