Description
The Vitra House Whale is a small scale reproduction of the original house whale which hung in Charles and Ray Eames' House - a wooden whale which was over 2m in length - and featured in many photo shoots, including the first photos of the Eames Lounge Chair. As collectors of folk art and other items they found on their travels the Eames' were extremely fond of hand painted objects and particularly those from the natural world.
'We never collected anything just as collectors, but because something was inherent in the piece that made it seem like a good idea to be looking at' - Ray Eames.
Together they organised their living space with tremendous joy, making the Eames House a developing and ever changing collage and reflection of their life.
The House Whale is a large piece at 70cm long and hand crafted from ash before being hand painted. A beautiful object for any fan of the Eames' or the natural world.

Charles & Ray Eames
American husband and wife design duo Charles and Ray Eames have had a profound influence on the visual character of American life, producing original work within the fields of architecture, furniture design, industrial design, manufacturing and the photographic arts.
The Eames’ first partnered with Vitra in 1957 to produce some of the most iconic pieces of furniture in the history of interior design. Today Vitra continues to reflect their philosophy on design and functionality, best understood through Charles’ own words: “Recognising the need is the primary condition for the design”.
