Why you'll love this pendant light
The PH5 mini pendant light was designed by Poul Henningsen in 1958 for Danish lighting brand Louis Poulsen. The light was designed as a response to constant changes to the shape and size of incandescent bulbs by bulb manufacturers. Poul voiced his distress by stating “After 33 years of basically Christian behaviour I have converted to Islam in my relationship to the manufacture of incandescent bulbs. For a generation, I have believed that consideration for the consumer and common sense would prevail, but now I have become a fatalist. I have accepted fate, and with Louis Poulsen´s permission, I have designed a PH fixture that can be used with any kind of light source, Christmas lights and 100 W metal-filament bulbs. Although a fluorescent tube would be too much to ask in the existing form!”
The PH5 Mini light fixture is designed based on the principle of a reflective three-shade system, which directs the majority of the light downwards. By using a design based on the logarithmic spiral, Poul achieved even distribution of light over the entire curve of the shade for the PH 5. This even light distribution made it possible to control glare and shadow. Each shade reduces the amount of light equally, due to its distance from the light source.
