GUBI Poltrona Tria Lounge Chair
Designed by Carlo De Carli in 1973 and restored by GUBI fifty years later, the Poltrona Tria is a rattan lounge chair with a presence that's difficult to place — organic and architectural at once. The frame is built from natural rattan canes, steam-bent by hand and finished in a chestnut semi-gloss coat. The name refers to the three canes that form each armrest, fanning outward in a wing-like arc.
Available here in Reales 001, Fustagno 006, and Bouclé 001. Other upholstery options are available — contact us via live chat or at sales@utilitydesign.co.uk.

Description
In 1973, Carlo De Carli — architect, educator, and one of the central figures in mid-20th century Italian design — turned his attention to rattan for the first time. The Poltrona Tria was one of the last furniture pieces he designed before stepping back from practice entirely to focus on research and teaching. GUBI restored it to production fifty years later, studying Bonacina's original 1970s editions closely before making a small number of refinements for durability and modern use.
The frame is the reason to look twice. Natural rattan canes, steam-bent by hand, finished in a chestnut semi-gloss coat that deepens the material without masking it. The armrests are formed from three canes of varying lengths placed side by side — the detail that gives the chair its name, Tria, and its most distinctive feature: a wing-like arc that rises from the seat and rounds softly at the ends. Where the 1970s original used fabric webbing beneath the seat, GUBI's restoration replaces this with a rattan grid, making the composition fully cohesive. The only non-rattan element is a leather band securing the backrest canes — a functional detail from De Carli's original design that contributes as much to the chair's expression as its structure.
The cushions are deep-set and foam-filled, removable for cleaning, and upholstered in a choice of fabrics. We stock the Poltrona Tria in Reales 001 and Fustagno 006 — both 100% cotton — and Bouclé 001, a tactile mix of wool, cotton and nylon that sits well against the warmth of the rattan. Further upholstery options are available; contact us via live chat or at sales@utilitydesign.co.uk for more information and pricing.
At 85cm wide and 103cm deep with a 43cm seat height, it sits low and generously. Rattan is lighter than it looks — the chair moves easily and works alongside other furniture without demanding too much of a room.
