Description

The Standard Plastic Chair updates the original Standard Chair designed by Jean Prouvé in 1935/50 for Vitra. Standard is a prime example of Prouve's work with thin steel sheet, a material he had long been looking for during his previous work with cast metal.

Chairs take the most strain on their back legs, where they bear the weight of their user's upper body. Prouvé took this into account and designed these in voluminous hollow sections which pass the strain on to the floor. Conversely tubular steel piping is sufficient for the front legs that take relatively little strain.

This newer plastic version features a seat and backrest of robust plastic with the same powder coated leg structure. Collectively these combinations have been created for a new, contemporary look at a lower price than the original wooden seat/back version.

For use on a carpeted surface plastic glides can be selected or felt glides for a hard floor in 'basic dark' or 'brown' colours.

Jean Prouve

Jean Prouvé is regarded as one of the most influential furniture designers of the early modern design movement. Specialising in the use of steel and aluminium in his designs, he is said to have considered himself more as an engineer than a modern designer. Prouvé was a pioneer of his time concentrating purely on efficiency and the materials being used rather than just the aesthetic appeal of products. His iconic Trapeze Dining Table, manufactured by Vitra is one of his many timeless designs with its alluring appeal and versatility - flexible to apply to any design style.
