Liverpool Focus : OUTPUT Gallery

A space for local creatives

Liverpool's Ropewalks area has changed dramatically over the last five years. Where revered cultural destinations Cream and The Kazimier once sprawled, now ten or eleven storey blocks of student flats dominate the space. What once was filled with sunshine is now cast in shade. The Kazimier Gardens, that felt so secret, are now shockingly overlooked. In the midst of all this, OUTPUT Gallery is a young but determined art space. The gallery’s manager, Gabrielle de la Puente, has an exciting agenda: pushing the needs of Merseyside artists to the forefront of the gallery’s programming.

“We want OUTPUT to be as useful as possible – we need it to be relevant”
- Gabrielle de la Puente, Gallery Manager

Working within a noticeable gap in the local art scene, OUTPUT Gallery aims to turn the hierarchy within the art world on its head. The public are invited to take a seat in their café and enjoy a coffee and arancini, but are also invited to their regular INPUT days – events where audience feedback is given the platform it deserves. Gabrielle hopes that by encouraging people to consider their expectations for the gallery space, young and emerging artists with a link to Merseyside will be inspired to ask for a show.

“We’d like to empower the individuals who make up our art scene by hosting a gallery they not only feel welcomed to, but whose activity and purpose they have also helped decide.”
- Gabrielle de la Puente, Gallery Manager

It’s a big ask, but it also seems incredibly important. Liverpool’s art scene is filled with large-scale exhibitions and big name galleries. Tate Liverpool celebrates its thirtieth birthday this year, and National Museums Liverpool are putting on a nationally renowned exhibition of the Terracotta Warriors at the World Museum. Across town, the Bluecoat has just celebrated its three hundredth year. It is safe to say that Liverpool’s large scale cultural scene is thriving – but in the excited mêlée of these huge, crowd-pleasing exhibitions, what happens when local creatives want to get involved? How can Liverpool’s art scene be re-localised? OUTPUT aims to redirect energy, attention and funding to the artists themselves, so that there is mobility and action where there hasn’t been for a while.

Still in its first few exploratory weeks, OUTPUT launched with a show by Danielle Waine, a graduand of Liverpool School of Art. At the opening night of both the gallery and Waine’s show, her found assemblages were brought to life as she stalked the gallery: crackling twigs underfoot, dragging a screeching branch along the floor. The noise was picked up by tiny microphones and amplified into the room, revealing a hidden world of sound. The work was endearing and humble, and at times funny. It suited the down-to-earth gallery space perfectly.

OUTPUT’s upcoming programme is to be decided on the INPUT days – 16 & 17 June. Aside from art, the gallery will host film screenings and listening parties, with something happening every Thursday. Gabrielle is excited for Hassnat Sikander's performance on June 28th at 7pm; the double bill of John Waters' films that local DJ Alec Tronik has selected for July 12th and the album playback of Michael Lacey's music later in the summer on August 9th.

The gallery and cafe are open from 12 on Thursdays and Fridays, and from 11 on Saturdays and Sundays. Visit them at 32 Seel Street.
