The warm summer months are finally upon us, which means the start of wedding season, which means the start of endless evenings pinning everything from cakes to floral arrangements for your dream big day. Pinterest has basically put wedding planners out of business, offering a never-ending source of free wedding inspiration. But if you're soon to be married, instead of bingeing through the thousands of wedding boards why not check out this year's top trends instead? Pinterest recently released a 2017 Wedding Trend Report based on the most popular pins and we decided to go through that and review what came out on top. Here's 12 of this year's hottest Pinterest Wedding Trends, with some board pinspiration to match!
There's a growing fluidity between lifestyle and interior trends and this couldn't be more true than with the case of greenery. The Pantone Colour of the Year has had a huge impact on fashion and design, influencing the rise of the indoor plant/urban jungle trend. This has permeated its way into the wedding scene, with Brides ditching ornate florals for simple, elegant greenery as a beautiful (and budget friendly) decor alternative. Pinning simple green arrangements is up a whopping +300%.
The Drip Cake
You can't have a wedding without a show-stopping cake and this year that means a drip cake! Icing lovers will be happy to know that the drip cake has replaced the naked cake as the dessert of choice, with a 437% increase in pins YoY.
Off the Shoulder Bridal Dresses
Off the shoulder t-shirts are literally everywhere in women's fashion right now but with a little help from OITNB Actress Samira Wiley it's moved onto wedding dresses. According to Pinterest more and more Brides are going cold-shoulder, with pins for this style going up 158%.
It's not the just Brides who are forgoing wedding fashion tradition. Grooms are ditching the classic black suit in favour of a brighter, blue hue. Searches for blue groom suits are +90% YoY on Pinterest.
Wedding planning can be stressful, so more and more couples are postponing their honeymoons, opting instead to go on shorter, more local breaks straight after their ceremony. Mini moon pins are up 125% with Dublin, Scotland, Iceland, Croatia, Venice, Bath and Paris coming out on top for short, romantic getaways.
Santorini pins have gone up 70% as couples opt for lower-budget honeymoon destinations over exotic (expensive) islands like Hawaii and Bora Bora. This beautiful Greek Island is famous for its cliffs, beaches and stunning sunsets making it a luxury yet affordable travel destination.
New Zealand Adventure
Spring and Summer are typically regarded as the hottest wedding seasons but it looks like Autumn could start to take over. Brides are Grooms are turning to slightly cheaper (and cooler) autumn months to tie the knot with these themed pins up 280%.
Blush pink has been enjoying time in the limelight ever since Pantone named Rose Quartz as its Colour of the Year for 2016. This isn't the 'girly' pink of the past but a more neutral, muted shade that's made its way into the fashion, interior and wedding world too. Dusty rose wedding pins have risen 255% Y.o.Y- one quick search brings up beautiful bouquets and bridal dresses in a soft, sunset colour palette of pink, rose and mauve.
Lavish dos are out and intimate dos are in. Some of Pinterest's most popular wedding trends imply millennial couples are opting for more casual, inexpensive affairs to celebrate the big day rather than over the top ceremonies and parties. For example, DIY drink stations are up 50%,ready to wear bridesmaid dresses are up 50% and natural hair styles are up 30%.
The Non-traditional Menu
If there's one theme that dominates the Pinterest 2017 Wedding Trend Report it's foregoing tradition. From fashion to food, couples to be are finding ways to make their weddings unique, personal and non-traditional. For the food menu, this means taco bars are up 132%, brunch-themed menus are up 35% and mini food and drink pairings are up 60% (more on that below). We've also noticed a strong presence of floral-infused ice cubes and non-traditional desserts such as cake pops and ice lollys.
Fun Food Presentations
Fun food presentation is part and parcel of the non-traditional menu wedding trend. According to Pinterest, couples are ditching standard cocktail hours and giving guests a fun and tasty alternative: food and drink pairings. Think sliders with shots of beer, or oysters with sparkling wine tastings (up +60% YoY).This is part of a wider trend for fun, unusual food and drink presentations that wedding planners noticed became popular last year and have dominated trends this year.
Pimp Your Prosecco
This one wasn't included in the Pinterest 2017 Wedding Trend report- perhaps because some of the trends (e.g hen parties in New Orleans) reflected its American audience. Prosecco is one of the UK's favourite drinks at the moment and that's reflected in Pinterest wedding trends, with an abundance of ideas for how to pimp your prosecco, such as decorating it with cotton candy, florals and glitter! We loved this trend so much we couldn't help but include it.
