“Infinite are man's expressions of beauty and love; open your eyes your ears and your heart to them and you will unite the peoples of the world.”
Alexander Girard, renowned textile designer and architect brought his talents, love of folklore and traditional art into the world of interior design in the 1940s until his death in 1993. Today Vitra have reintroduced many of Girard's designs so that we can enjoy and marvel at the genius of Girard in our homes and workplaces.
Inspired by his own personal collection of folklore dolls Alexander Girard created his wooden dolls range for his own home in Santa Fe. Designed to be part toy and part decorative, the dolls are the epitome of Girard's passion for traditional folk-art.
Re-created by Vitra from original dolls found at the Girard estate and the Vitra Design Museum, these delightful, colourful dolls are considered to be a charming addition to any home. They'll sit comfortably with many decorating styles, including contemporary and particularly those with a distinct leaning towards traditional folklore.
Hand painted in solid pinewood the variation in emotions the faces display adds to their quirky look. Included within the collection are dolls with real feathers used as wings or hats, as well new cat and dog dolls launched this year.
