The Strongman Nutcracker Marcello by Marcel Wanders for Alessi is part of the Limited Edition "Circus" collection. Wanders pictured his Strongman as strapping heart-breaker with his barbell loaded with big golden balls to show off his amazing strength His face grimaces from the effort, his muscles ripple and his feet are planted firmly on the platform. The functional elements of the nutcracker are concealed within the design; the platform conceals the hollow where the nut is placed, turning the weights lowers the cursor and the lace-up boots typically sported by weight lifters form the element that actually cracks the nut.
As well as everyday objects the Circus collection includes 6 character designs, each with their own persona and exquisitely detailed to capture the atmosphere and pageantry under the Big Top. Each piece is limited to 999 pieces worldwide and is numbered, making these true collectors pieces.
A sculptural object this lovable Strongman is dedicated to true connoisseurs of the applied arts, and is composed of 18 parts in 18/10 stainless steel plus a brass nut and screw, produced using three different production processes. Lost wax casting, for complex design elements with minute details to be reproduced; CNC machining for details that require high-precision execution for the purpose of coupling; and flatbed laser cutting for complex geometric figures. Each one is decorated with decal transfers appliquéd by hand and then kiln-fired. Any slight variations in the colour or decal appliqué – either between one item and another, or over time – should be considered intrinsic characteristics of a product made employing an artisan process, which results in each item being truly unique.
