This is a scale model of the original Selene Chair that was designed by Vico Magistretti in 1968, during the heyday of plastic furniture in the 1960s. In comparison to the designs of contemporaries, who turned to Pop Art for inspiration, the furniture and lighting objects by Magistretti were notable for their restrained formal idiom. The original Selene chair's most remarkable feature was the design of the legs: the S-shaped curves increase tensile strength while permitting an unusually slim and elegant silhouette.
These stand-out features of the Selene Chair have been duplicated in this Vitra miniature model version of the full-sized chair. As part of the Vitra Design Museum collection, classic chairs have been edited into miniature editions to form part of modern furniture design history. The construction, materials and colours of the miniatures correspond to the historical Vitra Design Museum collection originals, right down to the last detail.
Because they are so true to the originals, the miniatures are not only valuable collector's items, but also ideal illustrative materials for universities, design colleges and architects.
