The Vitra Design Museum have launched this collection of Classic Trays depicting designs and imagery by three of Vitra's leading designers. The motifs contained within the transparent material, which give the trays their character, are typical of the graphic vocabulary of the designers involved.
Pictured in order they are :
"China Shop" (main image) by George Nelson, 1950. This shows silhouettes of various vases, bowls, mugs, glasses and so on picked out in three harmonising colours.
"Eden" by Alexander Girard, 1966. This depicts a bird and various plant motifs which Girard worked into a composition oscillating between naive folk art and Matisse-like silhouettes.
"Miller Stripe" by Alexander Girard, 1973. This shows an abstract image which takes its inspiration from folk art and the colourful environment of central America.
"Mother and Child" - by Alexander Girard, 1961 shows two strongly stylised doll faces reminiscent of his Wooden Dolls and Plyprints.

A fantastic complement to other designs by these pioneering creatives these Classic Trays make excellent decorative and practical use and reiterate the importance of small furnishings and accessories in defining the space in which we live and work.
