Stelton was established in the 1960s when two war time friends Stellan and Carlton joined together to produce innovative good design with the focus of enriching people’s lifestyle. Danish steel was the vogue in Denmark in the 1960s, so the two decided to collaborate with a small factory called Danish Stainless to broaden the market for high quality Scandinavian design.

Stelton began by marketing a stainless steel gravy boat that met very high demand in both Denmark and the United States, thus the brand soon established itself as the epitome of Danish design.

Peter Holmblad joined the company as the managing director with the key role of keeping Stelton at the forefront of modern design. He approached his stepfather, Arne Jacobsen, Denmark’s most renowned architect and designer to produce a range of stainless steel tea and coffee sets. Cylindra-Line immediately met great success, winning the ID prize in 1967. The range was considered the best in its class as with its simple cylindrical shape combined with its brushed steel surface it stood out against the highly polished curved products already available in the market.

After the passing of Arne Jacobsen, Erik Magnussen joined the company, a young ceramicist and designer who has been responsible alongside several other established designers for the success of the brand ever since. Magnussen has designed many award winning products for Stelton, with the most celebrated being the Vacuum Jug that is still seen as a contemporary iconic piece that has sold more than 10 million units since 1977.

In 2004 Micheal Rigg preceded Peter Holmblad as managing director of Stelton with the new direction of adding new lines to the range that appealed to a much wider audience. The current collection not only offers the original cylindrical forms but also more softer shapes to meet the demands of the modern consumer.
