Robert Dudley Best

Robert Dudley Best was an industrial designer by training and creator of the eponymous Bestlite, the table and desk lamp which was one of the first manufactured goods in the UK from the Bauhaus movement.

His design influences were the work of Mies Van Der Rohe and Le Corbusier and it was their inspiration which persuaded him to travel to Paris to study industrial design. The result of his work was the Bestlite, which he put into production at his father's factory - Best and Lloyd. Its initial reception was luke warm and it was favoured mostly by car repair shops for its functionality. The turning point came with the mention in The Architects Journal, giving the Bestlite a much needed boost and finding a following amongst architects. It was the true bastion of Britishness, though, in the form of Winston Churchill, who put the light on the design map; he had a Bestlite on his desk in Whitehall.
