Nigel Coates
NIGEL COATES was born in Malvern, Worcestershire in 1949 and studied architecture at the Architectural Association, London from 1972 to 1974 where he also taught from 1979 to 1989. In 1983 he co-founded NATO (Narrative Architecture Today) and edited their first magazine. Together with Doug Branson he established Branson COATES Architects in 1985 and has since worked on numerous projects including shops for Jasper Conran, Katherine Hamnett and Jigsaw and a new gallery at the Geffrye Museum, London. Apart from his architectural projects he has also produced several notable furniture designs as well as household items for Alessi.
In 1995 he was appointed professor of architectural design at the Royal College of Art, London.
