The innovative Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa is famed for reinventing everyday objects so that they relate to their surroundings. Fukasawa bases his designs by focusing on how we use things in our everyday lives instead of focusing on the visual aesthetic of the object.
Fukasawa was born in 1956 in the Yamanashi prefecture of Japan. After graduating in 1980 from the Department of Product Design at the Tama Art University he started his career at IDEO, where his true potential was discovered and in the short space of seven years he was appointed director of IDEO Japan. In 2003 he went on to start his own company, Naoto Fukasawa Design Studio, where he now creates pieces for some of the worlds most desirable brands.
Some of his most recent pieces include the collection for Magis which comprises the Magis Déjà Vu Mirror and Tempo Clock. This collection expresses his use of uncomplicated, simplistic shapes which use revolutionary methods of manipulating unconventional materials.
