Simon Hansen set up the company Danish Steel House in 1979, supplying steel products to the catering industry. His aim was to combine form and function in a Scandinavian style, stripping away all surplus detailing thus allowing the product to be seen in its purist form - reflecting only great craftsmanship. The company did not reach international success until 1988 following the release of their Irish coffee set, which immediately became one of the brand's most recognized pieces. From this commercial success they decided to employ the designer Pernille Vea, whose innovative and unique designs were an instant hit - thus allowing the brand to quickly grow and expand.
From 2004, the Hansen family formed the umbrella company "Scandinavian Living", that covers everything from accessories for around the home, to kitchen utensils and outdoor lighting. Some of their most popular pieces take inspiration from classic everyday designs that have been recreated to suit the brands utilitarian style. For example, the Classic Globe, Jewellery Tree and Wine Breather Carafe have become key pieces synonymous with the brand.
In more recent years the Hansen family sold a share of their business to Peter Mitgaard. Menu’s permanent design team has also expanded to now include Norm, Jakob Wagner and Christian Bjørn.
