Jean Prouvé

Jean Prouvé is regarded as one of the most influential furniture designers of the early modern design movement. His father Victor Prouvé, whose work as a ceramicist during the Art Nouveau movement is still highly regarded today, artistically influenced him from an early age. Born in France in 1901, Jean Prouvé initially trained as a metal smith. He opened his own workshop in 1923, where he designed and produced modern metal furniture as well as collaborating with some of the most distinguished French designers of the time.

Specialising in the use of steel and aluminium in his designs, he is said to have considered himself more as an engineer than a modern designer. Jean Prouvé was a pioneer of his time concentrating purely on efficiency and the materials being used rather than just the aesthetic appeal of the products. Some of his most recognized pieces of work can be seen at the Cite Internationale Universitaire de Paris, where he was approached to design several now iconic pieces like the Trapeze Dining Table and the shelving units for the dormitories.

The Anthony Chair he produced in 1954 was one of the last creations of the designer. Following this Jean Prouvé was forced to abandon his lifelong passion and instead address the challenges of prefabricated architecture, this later led to his own house which he designed becoming the prototype for prefab housing.
