Isamu Noguchi 1904-1988
Isamu Noguchi continues to be one of the most celebrated sculptors of the twentieth century. He travelled a lot throughout his lifetime and this was a huge inspiration that can be found throughout his work through his experimentation of materials that he had seen widely used in different cultures around the world, including marble, sheet aluminum, basalt, granite, and water. He used sculpture to influence his work across all design disciplines, such as set design, ceramics, architecture, furniture and lighting designs.
The Los Angeles born designer decided on a career change after moving to New York to study pre-medicine at Colombia University. Initially he began to take evening sculpture classes as a hobby but decided to pursue this passion as a career instead. His work however did not gain public recognition until 1938 when he was commissioned to complete a large-scale sculpture symbolizing the freedom of the press, for the Associated Press building in the Rockefeller Centre, New York City. This piece marked the first of many commissions worldwide to create large-scale sculptures, Noguchi was very inspired by the social significance of sculpture.
When given the opportunity to venture into the mass-production of his interior designs, Noguchi seized it as it allowed him to fuse his passion for sculpture with his love of sharing its beauty with the world. His favourite piece was the Noguchi Coffee table produced by Vitra as it is a reflection of the bronze and marble sculptures of the time, translating their biomorphic formal language unadulterated into a piece of sculptural furniture.
Noguchi has received numerous awards throughout his lifetime including the Edward MacDowell Medal for Outstanding Lifetime Contribution to the Arts in 1982; the Kyoto Prize in Arts in 1986; the National Medal of Arts in 1987; and the Order of Sacred Treasure from the Japanese government in 1988.
