Born in de Meern, the Netherlands in 1963, Hella Jongerius studied design at the Academy of Industrial Design in Eindhoven. She started her career by creating her own design studio, Jongeriuslab, in 1993 where she grew into an established designer producing collections for reputable clients like Vitra, Royal Tichelaar Makkum and Maharam. She has become a recognized designer in the industry for the way that she fuses traditional design styles with contemporary crafts to produce elegant, timeless designs.
The best example of her style can be found in her rejuvenation of the White Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman that she designed for Vitra. This contemporary version of the classical design from the 1950s exemplifies her great attention to detail and appreciation for the use of quality traditional materials.
Away from her design studio she also embarked on a period of teaching at the Design Academy in Eindhoven from 1998-1999, and served as head of the department at Living/Atelier from 2000-2004.
Her work has been shown at many highly regarded museums and galleries worldwide, with her most recent being "Inside Colours", an installation for the exhibition "MyHome", at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein. She has been awarded the Createur de l’annee in France (2004) and the Rotterdam Design Prize for Repeat in the Netherlands (2003).
