Harry Bertoia 1915 - 1978

Harry Bertoia did not enter the design industry in the most conventional way. After leaving his post as a teacher at the Cranbrook Academy of Art to join the war effort in the Eames Office in Venice, California, he started attending a welding class at the Santa Monica City College.

Bertoia developed a fascination within his work for developing not furniture but sculptures that reflected a human extension of nature. He primarily used hand coated metal rods in his work as they allowed him to build up large nets that formed a multi-layered effect signifying space and time. The first examples of this new style of seating were seen when he accepted the invitation to work for Knoll Associates, where he produced the Bertoia Chair in the 1950s. Bertoia was also asked to produce several other commissions throughout his career for exhibitions, with his priority in his later career based on experimenting with sound.

His awards include the craftsmanship medal from the American Institute of Architects, as well as AIA’s Gold Medal. Bertoia’s work still retains its timeless appeal as he was a pioneer whose unique vision can never be replicated by any other designer.
