Fritz Hansen

FRITZ HANSEN was founded in 1872 when Fritz Hansen himself registered as cabinet maker in Copenghagen. It remained a traditional Danish furniture manufacturer until the 1950's when it started working with architect and designer Arne Jacobsen. Prior to then Fritz Hansen's commercial success had been due to the manufacture of seating for cinema and theatre auditoria. The collaboration with Jacobsen, though, produced over fifty different models, seven of which are still in production by the company.

The three legged Ant Chair, together with its successor the Series 7 Chair are not only the company's most successful products but are amongst some of the best selling items of furniture in the world. Furthermore, the brave curves of the Swan and Egg chairs really broke the mould from traditional furniture design.

After a period of declining sales in the 1970's Fritz Hansen was taken over and presently the company has a bigger turnover than any other furniture manufacturer in Denmark. A large share of its commercial success is derived from the manufacture of pieces designed by Poul Kjaerholm - still one of the lesser known, yet one of the great Danish Modernists.

Founded and rooted in Denmark with an international recognition in the private as well as the professional market and Fritz Hansen products are manufactured at its own facilities north of Copenhagen and at skilled sub-suppliers in Northern Europe. Each piece is still designed by a reputable international designer in a close cooperation with Fritz Hansen.

Fritz Hansen’s products are often copied, produced and sold in many countries around the world. As a result the authenticity of each item is guaranteed with a ”label of origin” which, in turn, creates added value to the furniture and even includes the year the product was manufactured. In this way customers will always be able to tell that an item is a Fritz Hansen original, when the product was made and the value of the item will be easier to ascertain.
