Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby united together after graduating with Master’s degrees from The Royal College of Art in London in 1996. In their early commissions they concentrated on the folding and shaping of sheet material; this method has become a style staple for the pair and can be seen in their Tab Floor Lamp created for Flos, which went on to win the award for Best Floor Lamp by Wallpaper in 2009. To date the pair have won a grand total of 17 awards worldwide.
The pair are celebrated for their research-led practice, constantly challenging and experimenting with new ideas to persistently push the boundaries of design. Barber and Osgerby have produced collections for some of the world’s best brands including Magis, Vitra and Flos while also completing one-off pieces for both private and public commissions. Their work is displayed in collections around the world including the V&A Museum, London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Design Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
Barber and Osgerby were chosen for a recent commission in 2010 for Sony, to create an investigational installation at the Milan Salone del Mobile Internazionale. The piece created was a true reflection of the skills of these two great minds as the objects explored and exploited Sony’s new innovations in sound technology.
