As one of the leading manufacturers of small electrical appliances, Braun is widely recognised worldwide for it’s modern German industrial design style through its combination of functionality and technology. In 1921, engineer Max Braun established the Braun brand in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He began by producing radio parts which he then developed to full radio sets, within a few years Braun was one of the first manufacturers in Europe to combine radios and record players in a single unit.
During World War II the business ceased as nearly all the factories in Frankfurt were destroyed and it was not until 1945 that Max Braun began to rebuild his company. In 1951 Max Braun passed away, the business was left to his two sons, Arthur and Erwin, who wanted to set the company apart from its competitors. In 1956, they created their first design department in collaboration with the Ulm School of Design to develop a new product line. This collaboration led to the introduction of the pioneering product designer, Dieter Rams, whose SK4 record player he designed for Braun has become a staple design in the classic Braun collection. Dieter Rams was responsible for many of Braun’s most prized designs, later becoming Head of Design and a key character in the German design renaissance between the late 1950s and 1960s. Many of his designs can be found in permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Some of Braun’s most popular pieces include their range of travel alarm clocks and watches which include precision German movements, known for their silent nature and high accuracy. A variety of models also use radio controlled movements for complete accuracy of time. The timeless styles continuously being produced by Braun has ensured that it is still as aesthetically pleasing today as it was over ninety years ago. In 2000, Braun was voted “Electro Retail Partner” ahead of three of its competitors by markt intern, a German trade journal for retailers of electric appliances.
