Arabia was established in 1873 near Helsinki by Swedish company Rörstrand who was also a producer of porcelain kitchenware. During the first world war, the company passed into Finnish ownership and by the second world war was producing more porcelain than anywhere in Europe. Expansion continued into the second half of the twentieth century venturing into pottery, domestic and utility-wares.
Arabia has now become known as Finland's oldest and largest ceramics manufacturer whose rise to fame over the past 130 years can be attributed to its range of dishes and design gift products. The distinctive and inventive design makes them perfect for either display or kitchen table use and play a central role within everyday Finnish life. Recognised for their aesthetic value and beauty Arabia's consumer led approach has made them top of the list of the most esteemed brands in Finland, the ability to constantly reinvent has been a huge strength.
Continually working with distinguished and talented Scandinavian designers has established Arabia as a manufacturer of high quality and functional porcelain products globally. The Kilta range by Kaj Franck in 1953 catapulted Arabia into modernism and simplistic designs along with artists such as Oiva Toikka and Francesca and Richard Lindh who have further cemented the reputation.
Numerous design awards have been received internationally such as the Design PlusPlus prize in Frankfurt’s Ambiente Fair for Kati Tuominen-Niittylä’s Storybirds pitchers in 1994, Heikki Orvola’s 24h tableware in 1997, Pia Törnell’s Tilda range in 1998 and Pekka Harni’s ABC bowls in 1999.
Staying true to their Finnish roots, the classic and much loved story of the Moomins, written by Finnish writer and artist Tove Jansson, have recently been turned into ceramic illustrations by Tove Slotte who has created the Moomin Mug Family collection.
